This article completely blew my mind. I cannot believe that any member of the Catholic church could say this with a straight face.
Apparently, people are being ‘attacked’ for not supporting homosexuals. They are “stigmatised, and worse — they are vilified, and prosecuted.”
OMG?!!? Really? Unbelievable, I can’t imagine anyone would stigmatize, vilify, or prosecute anyone for their sexual orientation. I will say that in the last few years, the Catholic Church has toned down the rhetoric against homosexuality. (And fundamentalist Christians are by far the worst.)
In Britain, [The Catholic Church] had to close down adoption services because they refused to allow same-sex couples to adopt orphans in their care.
It has also opposed the growing acceptance of same-sex marriage in several countries in Europe and the Americas.
This one just completely blew me away.
the Vatican believed in the inherent dignity of all human beings and condemned all violence against people because of their sexual orientation or behaviour.
As long as they are straight… and Catholic. Would you like to discuss the crusades, the IRA, the condom issue, Mother Teresa, etc? No, I didn’t think so.
Finally, in another fascinatingly oblivious and wrong statement:
“But states can and must regulate behaviours, including various sexual behaviours,” he said.
“Throughout the world, there is a consensus between societies that certain kinds of sexual behaviour must be forbidden by law. Paedophilia and incest are two examples.”
Geez, this spokesman is dumb. Pedophilia and incest are condemned because in the first case (and almost always in the second), the victim does not have the ability to resist and is not considered old enough to give informed consent.
In other words, they are protected by law because they are not sophisticated enough, strong enough, and independent enough to protect themselves.
What happens between two consenting adults is no one’s business (church, state, family, or job), but their own. And anyone who does not accept that does NOT accept “the inherent dignity of all human beings”.
BTW: This is the statement from the Catechism of the Catholic Church:
- 2358. The number of men and women who have deep-seated homosexual tendencies is not negligible. They do not choose their homosexual condition; for most of them it is a trial. They must be accepted with respect, compassion, and sensitivity. Every sign of unjust discrimination in their regard should be avoided. These persons are called to fulfill God’s will in their lives and, if they are Christians, to unite to the sacrifice of the Lord’s Cross the difficulties they may encounter from their condition.
- 2359. Homosexual persons are called to chastity. By the virtues of self-mastery that teach them inner freedom, at times by the support of disinterested friendship, by prayer and sacramental grace, they can and should gradually and resolutely approach Christian perfection.
Remember, it’s a ‘condition’. Homosexuals should also be chaste… kind of like priests…
WTF is ‘disinterested friendship’? Is that the kind of friends you get in church these days?
