Intelligent Design is Anti-Evolution – A formal debate

A challenge to a debate has been made an accepted.

My opponent in this debate will be JoeG.

The proposition is Intelligent Design is Anti-evolution

I will be speaking in support and JoeG will be speaking against.

There will be an opening statement of about 4500 words max.  A single rebuttal round of less than 2000 words and a closing statement of about 500 words.  All statements will be co-located on my and JoeGs blogs.

There will be approximately one week between posts (Opening statements are due next Friday April 29th).

This post will be updated with links to the relevant entries on both blogs as they become available.

UPDATE: Opening Statements are posted.  Rebuttal is scheduled for May 6th.  I believe that someone will be setting up a peanut gallery at After the Bar Closes.  Comments on Opening Statements are welcome, but the debate is (at present) between Joe and I.  Thanks in advance for your restraint.

UPDATE (5/3/11): Joe has requested to speed up the debate some.  I don’t have a problem with that, so my rebuttal is up.

UPDATE (5/4/11): Looks like Joe’s posts are up and now everything can be added for the rebuttal stage.  I haven’t discuss the deadline for the closing argument with Joe, but it’ll have to be either Friday or next week sometime.  I’ll be travelling over the weekend.  Arguments have been posted all that’s left is a 500 word closing argument, so feel free to comment on the debate posts.

UPDATE (5/5/11):  I’ll be out travelling for a while and I’m kind of bored with this anyway.  My closing statement is published.  I’ll get Joe’s and the other links sometime next week.

What is at stake? The existence of God? Should He/She be nervous?

  2. Joe G says:

    Thanks Ogre.

If I have anything to say before then I will put it here. Otherwise until next Friday…

  3. Twinkledorp Peabody IV says:

Can monkeys ‘by chance’ ever fly to the moon?

  4. Twinkledorp Peabody IV says:

Do we live in our bodies or do we live in our mind? Where in the physical world does our mind exist? Can you show me one? Where is a thought? Hey, you are reading the manifestation of one. Does it exist now? What came 1st? Could these words appear without thought? I will never know, for I am a monkey.

  5. Tomato Addict says:

How about references, are they to be included in the word limit? Not counting them against the limit would encourage more references. Counting them might encourage tighter arguments.

    I vote for counting them.

  6. Wolfhound says:

I’ll be at the ready with a mop and a bucket of disinfectant to clean up the spilled blood and leaking brain matter.

  7. Twinkledorp Peabody 111 says:

Please do not mind my child. He is a bit of a handful.

    Good luck with your debate.

    Heh.

Careful with that gun, OgreMkV, you’re gonna blow a hole in the bottom of the barrel and all the fish will escape.

  9. Human Ape says:

There’s nothing to debate. Intelligent design is bullshit.

  10. Joe G says:

OK my opening post will be posted at 10AM on my blog. When I get back I will look for your opening and copy it to my blog.

  11. Joe G says:

Never mind, I see your post is up so I will post mine now.

    Nice quote-mining in your opening…
